Lot of 7 vintage anonymous photographs.
This group of photographs relate the sale of the first airplanes, 3 Bristol Boxkite airplanes, to the South African Army by the Belgian aviator Joseph Christiaens.
Christiaens went to South Africa to do demonstrations and sell 1 to 3 Bristol Box-Kite. The first, ne28 to Dr John Weston, the second was no doubt ne27 and the last was used for parts. The Bristol Box-Kite (66 were built) were designed by Sir George White, (inspired by Farman). (He probably worked for the British & Colonial Aeroplane Company, Bristol ne27 july 10th, 1910).
A biography of Christiaens is available in our November 2006 exhibition here: http://www.past-to-present.com/christiaens.cfm
